Marketing in SME Manufacturing, is there a place for it?
We are a lean manufacturing business, trying to compete and grow in an aggressive market with numerous challenges; marketing is all that fluffy stuff like advertising. We can’t afford to do marketing in SME manufacturing, right?
Stop! If this is your thought process, take one or two minutes to read this post. It might just change your mind.
Marketing in its purest form is not “all that fluffy stuff”. Marketing is the way you get your companies message out there in a strategic and controlled way. It’s about knowing who your audience are and how you can best communicate with them to get your message across successfully. This does not cost the earth, and can actually be done in an extremely cost effective manner, especially in today’s world.
I previously referenced the term “strategic”, and cannot emphasize enough how important that term is when we talk about marketing. If you have a business growth plan and no marketing plan, my question to you is how are you going to achieve that growth? Who is your business talking to? What about? Are they listening? Most importantly, do they have the potential to be a future customer that can guarantee the growth of your business?
As a manufacturer you know about manufacturing efficiencies and the importance of being focused and driven to achieve the results you need in production, quality and delivery. Take these principles and apply them to your business growth and marketing and communication plan and watch your business grow. Don’t ask yourself whether or not you can afford to do it, ask yourself whether you can afford not to! In a competitive and aggressive market like the one we face today, the answer will almost certainly be no.
